Client Objectives/Account Opening Process
QV Investors manages an individual's portfolio guided by a client's objectives.
The account opening process begins with defining an individual's investment requirements, preparing an appropriate policy document, and selecting suitable assets.
Our Investors Guide to Defining Objectives
QV's Investors Guide to Defining Objectives sets out the returns and risks found in the asset classes, considers the influence of the time horizon, the tolerance for risk, the selection of assets and of suitable pooled funds. We provide our Client Investing Requirements Form to assist in the process.
Discretionary Investment Management
We provide individual or private investors direct investment counsel or indirect management through our Sub-Advisory relationships. We provide our Client Agreement Form to record a client's contact information and the extent of our services.
At the outset, we will require:
- Photo identification
- Void cheque providing banking information
- If the account is opened by cheque, it may be made payable to RBC Dexia
- If the account is opened by a transfer, QV Investors will prepare the appropriate forms and letters for the client's signature
Subject to a client's investment objectives, we build and manage funds day-to-day on a on a discretionary basis.
Pooled Funds
We manage funds in our Pooled Funds or on a separate or segregated basis. We manage and employ five pooled funds to create an asset mix reflective of a client's long-term needs. Typically, we employ our Canadian Balanced Fund as a core portfolio and complement it with one or more of our specialty equity funds.
Segregated Funds
We use the pooled funds as models for all segregated accounts. We manage segregated portfolios for clients with special needs with respect to tax, liquidity, concentration of investments or income.
Reporting/Meeting
We inform clients on the progress of our pooled funds in our Monthly Update. We prepare Quarterly Account Reports, or monthly if required, for clients.
The Account Reports include:
- Overall Asset Mix Analysis
- Account Performance Review
- Transaction Summary
- Portfolio Security Listings
- Market and Fund Commentaries
The Asset Mix Analysis shows the exposure to asset classes or markets. The Performance Review provides historic and current quarterly and annual results compared to the market benchmarks. The Transaction Summary shows individual transactions in pooled fund or individual security holdings. Individual Security Listings record holdings by Asset Class, Industry Group and by Weight or Commitment. Our Commentaries address our overall strategy, individual security selections, and performance and give reason to our investment decisions
We encourage meetings on a semi-annual basis to review a client's requirements and account for our management. Annually, we provide reports for the preparation of taxes.
Additionally, pooled fund clients will receive from QV's trustee, RBC Dexia, a monthly statement showing the value of their account.
